Union Lodge No. 5 presents 2011 Scholarship Award to Rachel Winsor of Stamford
On Wednesday June 15 the brothers of Union Lodge No. 5 presented their 2011 Scholarship Award winner a check in the amount of $1,000. Rachel Winsor, graduating senior from Stamford High School, was chosen as the winner of Union Lodge No. 5’s 2011 Scholarship Award based on her educational achievements and award-winning application and essay. “Rachel’s application for this Award was one of the best we have ever received” Worshipful Master Jon Ringel, Scholarship Award Committee Chairman, stated. Committee member Junior Deacon Adam Ellyson noted that “Several dignitaries including Senator Richard Blumenthal included letters of recommendation for Rachel with her application.” Worshipful Master Ringel welcomed Rachel and her mother, Mrs. Seema Winsor, into the lodge for the presentation, and the brothers congratulated Rachel on receiving the award. “Congratulations and best wishes for your studies at the University of Connecticut,” Ringel stated. The brothers responded with a hearty round of applause. Rachel plans to pursue BioMedical Engineering as her field of study. Following the presentation, Worshipful Master Ringel invited Rachel and her mother to join the brothers for coffee and dessert. Several brothers asked Rachel questions about her studies and plans. One of the fun facts Rachel shared was that she recently came in second place in a game of “Spoon Assassins” at her school—students play an intricate game trying to “tag” their opponent with a spoon! Rachel also noted that she has two sisters also attending the University of Connecticut, so this scholarship is extremely important to her and her family.
